Feng Shui and Sick Building Syndrome

One of the most important aspects of Feng Shui today is your health.  If you are sick more than twice a year there could be issues with your home being sick, or also known as “Sick Building Syndrome”.  One of the issues of Sick Building Syndrome is mould growing within in the home.  If you smell mould it could be growing somewhere in your house.

What is mould?  It is fungi that is caused by dampness, condensation and humidity within any given area of the home and if not treated or taken care of right away could lead to health issues such as asthma, recurrent bronchitis, eyes, nose and throat inflammation, skin rashes, fevers, headaches, nose bleeds and even mood swings.

Signs of mould within the home:

  • Peeling paint.
  • Stains on the walls or ceiling spotting (caused by roof leaks due to plumbing or guttering).
  • Mould in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry due to poor ventilation.

Case Study: Young man in his mid thirties moved into a unit (renting) in the inner city of Melbourne and within the year he was diagnosed with Asthma.  It was later discovered in his bathroom that the shower frame was rotting due to mould and dampness buildup.  When he was showering he left himself open to breathe in the small spores of mould into his respiratory system, then creating dampness within his own body.

How to prevent mould issues within the home:

  • Kitchen, laundry and bathroom - good ventilation - open windows and supply these areas with exhaust fans
  • Clean and maintain guttering on a regular basis
  • Leaking roof and have it repaired right away

It is easy to keep mould away from your home through a few simple steps.  Remember a healthy home leads to a healthy life!
